Alphonse van Bredenbeck de Châteaubriant, born on March 25, 1877, in Rennes, and died on May 2, 1951, in Kitzbühel (Austria), is a French writer.

He was an active collaborator during France's occupation by Nazi Germany.

The van Bredenbeck family of Châteaubriant originates from Holland (not related to the writer François-René de Chateaubriand). Their French branch is part of the remaining families of the old Angevin bourgeoisie. Its founder, Gaspard van Bredenbeck (1637-1687), who became a French citizen, was a master sugar refiner and molasses producer in Saumur in 1670, then in Angers in 1675. His widow acquired the land of Châteaubriant at Sainte-Gemmes-sur-Loire on February 24, 1693. Alphonse de Châteaubriant is the son of Alphonse van Bredenbeck de Châteaubriant, a papal zouave and painter, and Marie-Louise Arnaud.

After studying at Lycée Clemenceau in Nantes, Alphonse de Châteaubriant attended the special military school of Saint-Cyr but did not pursue a military career. He mainly lived between Piriac-sur-Mer, where his property is located, Nantes, and Poitou.

Alphonse de Châteaubriant married in Saint-Nazaire, by contract of May 18, 1903, Marguerite-Eugénie-Thérèse Bachelot-Villeneuve (1876-1962), daughter of a doctor; they had two sons, Guy and Robert (1906-1992, writer under the name Yves Le Scal). During World War I, he also lived in Versailles, on rue de l'Orangerie, and his children attended Lycée Hoche, with his family making trips back and forth to Saint-Nazaire due to poor supply. Later, he met the poet Gabrielle Castelot. One of her two sons, the future historian André Castelot, became his private secretary for a time. (cf. Wikipedia)
