Description from the seller

Representation: Sardine fishermen in the port of Concarneau, France.

Signed and dated '23

The painter Willem Alexander Knip is regarded as one of the prominent painters of the Larense School. He was born on January 31, 1883, in Amsterdam and lived and worked most of his life in Laren (N.H.) and Blaricum.

Willem Knip trained as a decorative painter at the Quelliniusschool in Amsterdam and worked for some time in the studio of Chris Lebeau. He was also a student at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. To free himself from decorative influences, he settled around 1900 in Het Gooi, where he developed his own balanced impressionistic style.

Throughout his life, he undertook many foreign study trips, after which his color palette became increasingly lighter and more airy. His favorite subjects were landscapes, harbor views, cityscapes, and above all, picturesque spots.

His work is included in the book 'Painters of Amsterdam, Four Centuries of Cityscapes.'

His work can be found in various museums: including the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven, Singer Museum Laren, and the Rijkscollectie.
