Max Ernst (1891-1976) created a hand-signed, mixed-technique bronze relief titled "Bronze relief nº X", one of a limited edition of 12 plus 1 copies, in excellent condition and measuring 37 x 31.7 cm, produced in Germany.
Description from the seller
Max ERNST (1891-1976).
Bronzerelief nº X.
Signed and numbered in bronze by Max Ernst.
One of the 12 + 1 bronze plate copies, published by the prestigious Manus Presse of the, perhaps, the most genuine artist of the dada-surrealist group.
Our copy is the only author's proof of the small print run (0/12).
The piece belongs to a series made entirely in 1970: 12 copies for 12 different motifs based on lithographs that were used to make three important artist books: "Die Ballade vom Soldaten" (1972), in collaboration with the Dadaist Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes, "Wunderhorn" ( 1970) and "The Hunting of the Snark" (1968), both by Lewis Carroll.
The edition, prepared in person by Max Ernst, turns each copy into a unique piece, subjected in the foundry to the different variations in which the author investigated to conclude his work.
Size: 37 x 31.7 cm.
Our copy corresponds to the "Wunderhorn" motif number XXII from the book by Lewis Carroll of the same name and published the same year. In the manus presse catalogue, it is identified as "Bronzerelief nº X". The last photograph shows the motif of the Ernst-Carroll book, not included in the lot.
Bibliography: Spies/Leppien 135, for lithography. Manus Presse: Eine Dokumentation, 1961-1986, p. 34, for bronze.
Perfect condition, as purchased, without any damage that is unrelated to the imponderables or imperfections involved in working with bronze in the workshop.
Bronze images vary easily depending on lighting because the gold relief shines unevenly under different points of light.
Extraordinary.
