The fly box: 18th-century case
Beauty patches are black dots made of taffeta or velvet that women applied to their faces to enhance the whiteness of their complexion and add a touch of flair to their appearance. Among Persians and Arabs, dark spots on the skin are considered a sign of beauty; these peoples were among the first to wear beauty patches. While the use of beauty patches was already known in France in the 17th century, it was in the 18th century that they became symbols of adornment and femininity.
