Description from the seller
An excellent bibliophile edition of "Thaïs" by Anatole France, first published in the Revue des Deux Mondes in 1889, then by Calmann-Lévy in 1890, a novel here enhanced by the very striking illustrations of the artist Raphaël Freida (1877 - 1942): 22 original compositions, including 9 outside the text, printed on a wood press by Leblanc and Trautmann.
A fine copy, bound in a delicate binding signed Y. Chartier, executed in half morocco with corners, smooth spine, title, author and year of publication in small gilt tools. Gilt top edge, original wrappers and spine preserved, untrimmed margins.
One of 700 on Rives vellum numbered from 81 to 780 (no. 589).
One of the rare books illustrated by Raphaël Freida along with "Poèmes barbares" by Leconte de Lisle (1914) - "Oedipe roi" by Sophocles (1924) - "Hérodias" by Flaubert (1926) and "Le jardin des supplices" by Mirbeau (1927).
It tells the story of Thaïs, a beautiful 4th-century courtesan who worked in Alexandria and was renowned for her beauty. The monk Paphnutius succeeded in converting her to Christianity, but the sinful woman's beauty haunted his heart. Raphaël Freida's often stark realism is magnificently rendered here. This novel inspired Jules Massenet to create his famous opera "La Méditation de Thaïs" (The Meditation of Thaïs).
