Roger Dévigne, (1885-1965) journalist, poet, writer, and creator of art journals, was the first director of the National Phonothèque from 1938 to 1953.
His work Ménilmontant was published in 1924 (Ollendorff bookstore) and then in 1937 with compositions by Jules Adler etched by Raymond Haasen, as well as an English edition in 1927, titled The Gay Dreamers, an Idyl in Paris (Frederick A. Stokes Company).
The work was also adapted into a film in 1937 by René Guissart.
Known for his focus on themes related to the working world, Jules Adler (1865-1952), who was a student of Bouguereau at the École des Arts Décoratifs, debuted at the salon in 1888. He was well acquainted with working-class neighborhoods and the discomfort of part of the Parisian population, having opened a canteen in Pigalle for impoverished artists. His illustrations are strikingly truthful. (blog.paris-libris.com)
