Description from the seller

Beautiful edition printed in Grasset type by Frazier-Soye and illustrated with woodcuts by Paul-Emile Colin, including a frontispiece and 13 plates.

Unique print run of 150 numbered copies on Rives tinted vellum, this one being nominative for Mr. Victor Morax (no. 4), with his bookplate glued to the front endpaper.

Preface by Lucien Nass.

Bound in a luxurious brown half-morocco with corner pieces, with gilded fillets along the covers and edges. The spine with raised bands is decorated with the title in gold lettering. Gilt head. Covers and spine preserved, the first illustrated with an engraved vignette.
In very good condition. Solid binding, well-made, in excellent shape. Impeccable interior. Beautiful copy.

In this regionalist novel, the doctor and senator Jean Yole (1878-1956) recounts the journey of a widow forced to leave her beloved Marais for Gascony.

Provenance: Ex-libris of Dr. Victor Morax glued on the guard. Victor Morax, born on March 16, 1866, in Morges, and died in Paris on May 14, 1935, was a Vaudois doctor, ophthalmologist, and ophthalmologist. He discovered the Moraxella lacunata bacillus, which is responsible for chronic conjunctivitis.

Paul-Émile Colin (1867-1949) illustrated many works by Émile Zola, Maurice Barrès, Georges Duhamel, Anatole France, Rudyard Kipling, Hippolyte Taine, Jean Yole, and others. All these books are illustrated with wood engravings, mainly in black. Only one book is illustrated with color wood engravings: Poèmes de France et d'Italie by Pierre de Nolhac in 1923, and only one is illustrated with watercolors: Séductions italiennes by Clément-Janin in 1929.
His engraved works are significant, with over 1,700 pieces. He created wood engravings as well as numerous metal engravings (etchings and burin). His engraved production spans from 1893 to 1947.
