DESCRIPTION: I present at auction a monumental book of 360 years old, containing the 'COUSTUME D'ANJOU' (Customs of Anjou), well complete in a single large volume (15 x 9.5 inches) and weighing 3.5 kg, commented on by the famous French jurist René Choppin (1537-1606).

The 'Custom of Anjou' was the body of customary law applicable in the ancient and historic French province of Anjou, in the Loire Valley, centered in the city of Angers, famous for its castles and vineyards, and which was an important Duchy during the Middle Ages. The 'Coustume' regulated matters such as: successions and inheritances, marriage regime, property and land tenure, obligations and contracts, manorial and feudal law, etc.

Choppin's book explains, article by article, the Custom of Anjou and combines judicial practice, Roman law, and canon law. It includes cases, interpretations, and comparisons with other French customs, so it is not just a local commentary: it was used as a general reference in other regions of France. It is a key work for understanding French private law before the Civil Code and how customs were interpreted and applied. It was cited for centuries by judges and jurists.
