Description from the seller

A classic of humanistic lexicography: Schrevelius's Lexicon in the Padovan edition
Cornelius Schrevelius's bilingual Greek-Latin and Latin-Greek dictionary, reprinted in an enriched form in Padua at Bettinelli in 1806. The volume, intended for school and university teaching, reflects the vitality of early nineteenth-century Venetian classical culture, with a sober yet clear typographic design.
Market value
The 19th-century Italian editions of Schrevelius's Lexicon, although more widespread than the 17th-century editions, are now appreciated for their educational use and the robustness of the text.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
Half leather binding, with the title embossed on the spine. Frontispiece printed in black with a central engraved ornament depicting an eagle with outstretched wings beneath a sunburst, with the motto 'Resurgo.' Inner pages show signs of wear at the margins. In ancient books, with a centuries-old history, some imperfections may be present, not always noted in the description. Pp. 511; (2).

Full title and author
Cornelius Schrevel's Lexicon, a Greek-Latin and Latin-Greek manual. Both in this latest edition are much more extensive and richer.
Padua, Seminary Press, 1806.
Schrevelio Cornelio

Context
Schrevelius's Lexicon manual was one of the fundamental tools in classical education between the 17th and 19th centuries. Its success is due to its clear structure, solid lexical selection, and the dual-direction of the lemmario, which was useful for both beginners and scholars. This Padua edition testifies to the long-lasting popularity of the text in Italian schools and seminaries. The motto 'I rise again' and the eagle, a symbol of the rebirth of classical knowledge, allude to the central role of ancient Greek in the educational system.

Brief biography
Cornelius Schrevelius (1608–1664), Dutch lexicographer and physician, was the rector of the Leiden gymnasium. His most famous work, the Lexicon Graeco-Latinum, achieved great success, becoming a reference point in classical high schools and among Protestant and Catholic academic circles. The dictionary was often updated and reprinted, contributing durably to the spread of Greek in Western culture.

Printing History
Originally published in the 17th century, the lexicon underwent dozens of reprints. The Padua edition of 1806 was produced by the Seminary's printing house, under the direction of Bettinelli, a well-known printer and promoter of humanistic culture. This edition addressed the need for reliable and up-to-date texts for teaching Greek and Latin, especially in religious colleges.
