Willem de Zwart (1862-1931)
Sand extraction
Oil on panel

Willem de Zwart is a Dutch artist, etcher, watercolorist, and draftsman.
De Zwart lived and worked in The Hague until 1894 and from 1900 to 1905 in Amsterdam. Willem de Zwart's work displays a wide range of subjects: landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, and still lifes, depicted in a naturalistic-impressionist style. He stood out within the Hague School for his exuberant use of color. His work shows a kinship with the Amsterdam Impressionism focused on people and the city. In his choice of subjects, Willem de Zwart belonged to the Hague School, but in style and color use, he was part of the Amsterdam Impressionists. He is therefore also called the 'Hague Breitner'.
