ANRI Toriart Charlemagne chess set, produced in Italy in the 1960s–1970s, made from wood composition (Sculptite) and hand painted, complete with the original ANRI velvet-lined box and in very good condition.
Description from the seller
Both sets, light and dark, are entirely hand-painted, a distinctive and high-quality detail not found in all vintage chess sets currently available on the market, where often one of the two colors is left neutral or simply dyed.
This feature gives the set greater artistic complexity and a higher collectible value.
ANRI chess set – Toriart, famous 'Charlemagne' series, produced in Val Gardena (Italy), years 1960–1970.
The pieces are made from a wood-based composite material (wood composition / Sculptite), an original material used by ANRI for this line, then finished and hand-painted with great attention to chromatic and figurative details.
The bases are made of turned wood with original felt.
The King and the Queen depict Charlemagne and his consort, while the other figures represent characters and architecture inspired by the medieval period; the towers are sculpted like fortified castles, an iconic element of the Charlemagne series.
The set is complete with all pieces and comes with the original ANRI box featuring a red velvet interior and the inscription 'CHARLEMAGNE'.
The chess set was purchased between the 1960s and 1970s from a historic shop in Milan, which no longer exists today, and has since remained in a private collection.
Overall very good condition, with normal patina of age consistent with its age.
No damage, no missing items.
The ANRI series is particularly sought after, especially if complete, with the original box and both sets hand-painted, a feature that sets it apart from many subsequent vintage productions.
