Original 1889 edition of Le Portrait du Louvre. Conte de Noël, a 29-page French-language illustrated book by Eugène-Melchior de Vogüé and Le Comte de l'Aigle, limited to 525 copies on vellum, this copy no. 171, in good condition with a silk moiré portfolio and minor wear to the folder.

Original edition of this beautiful work, entirely engraved, adorned with 29 bistre and colored mezzotint engravings by Le Comte de L'Aigle, printed by Charles Chardon. A Christmas tale and a fantastical story set in the corridors of the Louvre, by the renowned translator of Russian literature, writer and diplomat Eugène Melchior de Vogüé (1848-1910).
Limited edition of 525 numbered copies. This one on vellum paper bears the number 171.
This Christmas story first appeared in the Journal des Débats on December 25, 1886, before being reprinted in the edition.
In leaves, under a pearl grey moiré silk portfolio, with laces serving as a clasp. Illustrated front cover.
Overall in good condition. Worn portfolio, damaged spine (restored inside with adhesive), marks and small stains on the covers, pierced corners. Interior clean and fresh despite some pinholes. Beautiful example.
The academic Eugène-Melchior de Vogüé (1848-1910) was a diplomat, orientalist, writer, traveler, archaeologist, and literary critic. He contributed extensively to the Revue des Deux-Mondes and wrote numerous texts about the Orient (Syria, Palestine, the Ottoman Empire, Greece, Cyprus, Spain, Russia...).
