Description from the seller
Two autograph letters signed by Marie de Régnier (1875-1963), probably written around 1905 after the publication of her novel L'Esclave, in which she discusses her novel and La Vie heureuse (a women's magazine founded in 1903 with many women writers participating).
Sunday. Dear Madam, I would gladly send my book to Madame Marni and am very touched that you thought of having my little novel read. But dear Madam (perhaps I misinterpreted your letter), if by any chance you had the kind idea—and I thank you for mentioning Esclave at the meeting of La Vie Heureuse regarding a prize, I ask you, to avoid any misunderstanding from the outset, not to do anything about it. Tuesday. Dear Madam, I thank you a thousand times for your charming letter, which touches me deeply, but my decision remains the same. I wish that my application not be considered at all, and therefore I would be very grateful if you could kindly inform the members of the jury of La Vie Heureuse. It is better that I do not have to refuse the prize, and the best course is that I am not awarded it, since I am absolutely resolved not to accept it. Please believe, dear Madam, in my sincere thanks and in my warmest and friendly sympathy. Marie de Régnier
