Author/Illustrator: 吾妻雄兎子(梅亭金鷲); Book Title: 『春雨衣』全三巻揃 合本江戸末期 戯作和本 Edo Period Gesaku Book “Harusame Koromo” – Complete 3-Volume Gappō-bon.
Description from the seller
Harusame Koromo (春雨衣) is an Edo-period illustrated gesaku work, offered here as a complete set in one bound volume (gappō-bon), containing all three original volumes, each with upper, middle, and lower sections fully present.
The author is Azuma Yūtoko (吾妻雄兎子), also known as Baitei Kinwashi (梅亭金鷲), a writer active in popular literature during the late Edo period. The work reflects the refined narrative style and emotional sensibility characteristic of Edo gesaku, which was widely enjoyed by urban readers.
The title Harusame Koromo (“Spring Rain Robe”) evokes poetic imagery associated with elegance, impermanence, and subtle human emotions. The book is illustrated with expressive woodblock prints depicting figures, interiors, and scenes of everyday life, providing valuable insight into Edo-period customs and aesthetics.
The illustrator of the woodblock prints is unknown, which is not uncommon for gesaku publications of this period, as illustrators were often uncredited. Nevertheless, the illustrations exhibit skilled line work consistent with late Edo-period popular book illustration.
This example is especially desirable as a fully complete set bound together, a format that has become increasingly scarce on the market.
Condition:
Considering its age, the condition is relatively good. There are age-related stains, light soiling, and signs of handling, all consistent with an Edo-period woodblock-printed book. No major losses or critical damage are observed, and the volume remains structurally sound.
Dimensions:
Approx. 18.2 cm (height) × 11.8 cm (width)
A fine and authentic example of Edo-period popular literature, suitable for collectors of Japanese antiquarian books, researchers of gesaku, or institutions seeking a historically meaningful work.
