This Showa period samurai armour display was made in the Kyoto armour-making tradition by Tadayasu and represents a Susogo-odoshi ō-yoroi. It is a decorative armour set created for Tango no Sekku, the Japanese Boys’ Festival, and is accompanied by its original wooden storage chest.
The helmet is fitted with a dragon maedate and prominent kuwagata antlers. The dragon symbolises strength, wisdom, protection, and the ability to overcome adversity, while the antlers represent authority, courage, and martial spirit. The textiles are decorated with embroidered chrysanthemum and pine motifs, symbolising longevity, renewal, endurance, and steadfastness.
Tango no Sekku, celebrated on the 5th of May, is a traditional festival held to pray for the healthy growth, strength, and future success of boys, with armour displays serving as protective and aspirational symbols within the home.
Iron is used only for the fittings on the haidate (thigh guard). All other structural components, aside from fabric and cords, are made of thick paper coated with lacquer, a traditional method used for festival armour. A wooden display stand is included, along with an illustrated instruction booklet showing the assembly process.
The set is in very good used condition with minimal wear. Please refer to the photos for details.
