Biography of Lluís Puig Barella (Barcelona, 1894 – 1984)
Disciple of Torres García. He studied at the Bell Art School of La Lonja and later at the Escola d’art de Francesc Gall, and from 1912, at the Escola de Bells Oficis, founded by Torres García, in which Sarriá and Del Cercle Maillol participated in the exhibitions they organized and in various group shows held in Bilbao and Barcelona, such as the October salons organized by the Layetanas galleries of Barcelona, in 1948 and 1949.
He was a painter with a distinctive personality, where various influences converge, which in his creative talent he assimilates into a 'rich mixture of modernism, symbolism, and primitivism,' as Santos Torroella affirms.
Born in Barcelona in 1894 and died in 1984, at the age of 90.
Museums and galleries
He held numerous exhibitions at the galleries Grifé, Escoda, Bosanova, Laietana, Gal. Lé de Barcelona, and Neuríe, Bilbao, or Goya Arte, Madrid. Additionally, through the mediation of the dealer Sergio Civill, representative of several galleries in America, he sells his paintings in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, the United States, and also in Sweden and Germany, so a large part of his work is abroad.
It is represented in various museums and public collections in Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, the United States, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, etc.
Due to his docility, variety of knowledge, and versatility, Puig Barella, whom Galí accused of 'having the vice of being too hardworking,' successively took charge of teaching upholstery, stained glass, jewelry, sculpture, enamels, repoussé, and ceramics at the 'Escola Superior de Bells Oficis,' where he was an assistant professor. He later created the 'Escuela de Pre-aprendizaje.' He belonged to the group Dàrt Nou and the Cercle Maillol.
Published opinions about the painter.
Important books about his work: Great Masters of Catalan Painting and Sculpture by Daniel Gir Miracle, Great Masters of Modern Art, and finally, the author's biography published by the Great Basque Encyclopedia.
Puig Barella is irreplaceable. Without him, there would be an inexplicable void.
Alexandre Cirici Pellicer, president of the International Association of Art Critics.
Book about the biography of Puig Barella, published by the Gran Enciclopedia Vasca, Bilbao, 1981.
