Lothar Matthäus is a former German footballer and coach. He played in five World Cups (1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998) and shares the record for the most appearances in different editions of the World Cup, along with Gianluigi Buffon, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and the Mexicans Rafael Márquez, Guillermo Ochoa, Andrés Guardado, and Antonio Carbajal. He also holds the position of the second most-capped player in World Cup history, with 25 appearances between 1982 and 1998, surpassed only by Lionel Messi.

He also won the 1980 European Championship and participated in the 1984, 1988, and 2000 editions. In 1999, at the age of 38, he was chosen as the German footballer of the year, a title he had already won in 1990. Matthäus is considered one of the most important players of the German national team. From 1979 to 1983, he actively participated in the U elections of the Federal Republic, and from 1980 onwards, he also took part in the A elections. He played his first match in the 1980 European Championship in Italy, which his team ultimately won. Since 1982, Matthäus has been one of the best players in the national team. He participated in the World Championships in Spain in 1982, Mexico in 1986, Italy in 1990, the United States in 1994, and France in 1998. After his playing career, he worked from 2001 to 2011 as a coach in Austria, Serbia and Montenegro, Brazil, and Israel, as well as head coach of the national teams of Hungary and Bulgaria. He then moved into television and mainly works as an interlocutor in live football broadcasts for the pay television broadcaster Sky and the private station RTL.

On December 14, 2020, he was included as a defensive midfielder in the historic Dream Team of the Ballon d'Or.
