Iker Casillas is a Spanish former footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He spent most of his career at Real Madrid C. F. and with the Spain national team, being considered one of the best goalkeepers of his generation and in the history of football.
He began his sports career at Real Madrid C. F., initially in their youth categories, and from 1999 to 2015 in the first team, serving as captain from 2010 to 2015. He is the second player with the most matches in the club's history, with a total of 725, behind Raúl González with 741. From 2019 to 2020, due to an acute myocardial infarction, he was part of the technical staff at F. C. Porto as a precautionary measure during his recovery until his retirement in August 2020.
He was a full international with the Spain national team from 2000 to 2016, serving as captain from 2006 to 2016. He is the second most capped Spanish international in history (after Sergio Ramos with 180) and the fifteenth worldwide with 167. He captained his national team, winning the continental championship in 2008 and 2012 and the World Cup in 2010, achieving the first 'treble' for national teams.
He was considered the best goalkeeper in the world by FIFA and UEFA for five years, through their awards FIFA/FIFPro World XI and UEFA Team of the Year. The IFFHS also named him the best goalkeeper in the world for five consecutive years, from 2008 to 2012. Likewise, he was continuously included between 2007 and 2012 in the final list of candidates for the Ballon d'Or.
