Zinne-beelden oft Adams appel, an illustrated Dutch emblem book by Jan van der Veen with engravings by Salomon Savery, published in 1662 in a leather binding, 594 pages, in Dutch.
Description from the seller
1662 EMBLEMS BOOK by Jan van der Veen (ca. 1587-1659), a Dutch poet, also called the Deventer Poet or the Deventer Father Cats. He was best known for his collection of poems 'Zinnebeelden oft Adamsappel' (Symbols of Adam's Apple), in which he describes and rejects human sins, texts with a moralistic character, comparable to, for example, those of Jacob Cats, Johan de Brune and Dirk Rafaëlszoon Camphuysen. This edition is richly illustrated with 51 copper engravings by Salomon Savery (1594–1666) a Dutch engraver and painter. Beautiful 18th century marbled calfskin binding with rich decorations and titles on the spine, in very good condition. Van der Veen wanted to put on the public stage the old and iniquitous misuse of life, by censuring, mocking, deploring and loathing the vices through emblems, songs and sonnets. This emblem work by Van der Veen is followed by his popular songs in the end of the book. COMPLETE BOOK. References; World Cat OCLC n°934766109; USTC n°1843517; J. Landwehr, Emblems and Fable Books printed in the Low Countries, 1542-1813 (1988), no. 842; M. Praz, Studies in Seventeenth-Century Imagery (2nd. ed., 1964), p.522-523; Eddy K.
