Maine de Biran published very little during his lifetime, despite having written extensively. Overall, he published the memoir on habit, his Political Discourses in pamphlets, the Examination of Laromiguière's philosophy lessons (anonymous), and an article on Leibniz for the Universal Biography. The history of his manuscripts is tumultuous. They were handed over to Laine, Maine de Biran's executor. Laine entrusted them to Cousin with the mission of sorting and publishing them. In 1834, Cousin published a volume titled 'New Considerations on the Relations of the Physical and Moral Aspects of Man' and a partial collection of Maine de Biran's other manuscripts under the title 'Philosophical Works'.
