Vaca Muerta meteorite, a mesosiderite composed mainly of iron–nickel metal, originates from Antofagasta, Chile.
Description from the seller
The Vaca Muerta meteorite is one of the most spectacular and well-known meteorites from South America. It was discovered in 1861 in northern Chile, in the heart of the Atacama Desert, one of the driest regions on Earth, whose extreme conditions have allowed for exceptional meteorite preservation.
With a total estimated weight exceeding 3,800 kg, Vaca Muerta ranks among the largest meteorites ever found in Chile. It is composed mainly of iron–nickel metal and displays abundant silicate (chondritic) inclusions visible to the naked eye, making it particularly attractive both aesthetically and scientifically.
Vaca Muerta is classified as a mesosiderite, an extremely rare stony-iron meteorite type, formed through the violent mixing of metallic core material and rocky mantle fragments from differentiated planetary bodies. These features are the result of major collisions that occurred during the early history of the Solar System.
- Weight: 6.4 grams.
Packages are usually sent the morning after the auction. Shipping is combined in all my listings - if you win multiple items, only one shipping cost is paid.
About the seller:
My name is Adrian Vilchez Luna, and I am deeply passionate about Astronomy and Planetary Sciences. I hold both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Planetary Geology and Geophysics.
My interest in meteorites extends far beyond collecting; I actively conduct research on asteroids and meteorites, collaborating with universities and research groups worldwide. This work allows me to bridge scientific research with the preservation and study of extraterrestrial materials.
