Jachttrofeeën is a 17th‑century oil painting from the Netherlands by William Gowe Ferguson (1632/33–post‑1689), a still life of hunted game in a dramatic Baroque composition, measuring 74.5 × 52.4 cm and sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
William Gowe Ferguson (Scottish, c. 1632/33 – after 1689) Hunting trophies (Still life with dead game birds) Oil paint on canvas
Dimensions: 52.4 × 74.5 cm painting, 65 × 87 cm
Signed and dated bottom right (visible on the canvas). The dating could not be determined.
A atmospheric and dramatic hunting still life in the finest Dutch tradition of the 17th century. Ferguson, a Scottish painter who spent most of his career in the Netherlands (including Utrecht, The Hague, and Amsterdam) and Italy, specialized in this genre. His works clearly show influences from masters like Jan Weenix, Melchior d’Hondecoeter, and Willem van Aelst, with masterful depiction of light, feather textures, and shadow play.
The painting depicts several beautifully arranged dead birds (including pheasants and smaller game) against a rocky landscape with a dark, mysterious background. The composition breathes the typical baroque drama: an ode to hunting, but also a vanitas element reflecting the transience of life.
The work is in good condition and features a classic frame. On the back, there is a label from Boselie Encadreurs - Restaurateurs from ’s-Hertogenbosch, a renowned atelier specializing in the restoration and framing of old masters. The frame has recently been professionally restored. An invoice is available.
