Gaspar De Witte II (1624-1681) - Paesaggio con ruderi e figure

This painting documents the Italian stay of the Flemish artist Gaspar De Witte II in Rome from 1646 to 1648, author of ideal views of the Lazio landscape, with monuments, ancient fountains, and ruined buildings.

The artwork is a painting on panel measuring 28x34 cm, with its beautiful frame measuring 46x53 cm.
It comes from an important auction house as shown in the attached photo.

Most of De Witte's creations were executed from life. The vivid light evoked in his work reflects a particular synthesis between Italianate taste and the Flemish landscape tradition. The work is interesting for understanding the peculiar influence exercised by De Witte and his fellow Roman vedutisti of the eighteenth century, especially Paolo Anesi and Paolo Monaldi.
