Description from the seller
“Bijinroku – Volume 12 (Part One)”
Illustrated Edo-Period Picture Book (E-zōshi)
Published after 1853 (Kaei 6)
Offered here is Bijinroku, Volume 12 (Part One), an original Edo-period illustrated storybook (e-zōshi) written by Santō Kyōzan, a prominent gesaku author of the late Edo period. This work belongs to the highly popular bijinga (images of beautiful women) genre, which flourished in Edo-period publishing and visual culture.
The collaboration of distinguished artists greatly enhances the value of this volume. The cover illustration is by Utagawa Toyokuni I, one of the most influential ukiyo-e masters renowned for his elegant portrayals of women, while the interior illustrations are by Utagawa Kuniteru, a popular pupil of Toyokuni who was active in book illustration and single-sheet prints.
Bijinroku presents idealized female figures and scenes of everyday life, reflecting Edo-period aesthetics, fashion, and social customs. As such, it serves not only as entertainment literature but also as an important visual document of urban culture in nineteenth-century Japan. Works from this series, especially those involving leading Utagawa-school artists, are occasionally encountered in auctions and are sought after by collectors of ukiyo-e and illustrated books.
Condition:
There is age-related wear consistent with the period, including slight waviness, rubbing, and handling marks. No major losses are observed. Overall, this is a genuine Edo-period example with strong historical and artistic appeal.
