Hilaire Bals (born 1940) began his artistic career as a student at the Academy of Sint-Niklaas, where his teachers included Marcel Mutsaerts and Raf Coorevits.
After this training, he focused on painting still lifes, animals, and paintings with a symbolist influence. Hilaire Bals's paintings can unmistakably be considered realistic. However, the intention is never to create a purely photographic representation; atmosphere and interpretation of reality play an important role. Consistently, against all trends, he upholds craftsmanship as a top priority. This perseverance results in paintings that testify to a love for beauty.

Description:
The painting *Boats off the Coast* by Hilaire Bals depicts a subdued maritime scene where man, ship, and sea are portrayed in a fragile balance. At the center is a fishing boat with billowing sails that appear to be angled against the wind. The boat is surrounded by turbulent water, with short, foaming waves emphasizing the dynamics of the coastal sea. In the background, several smaller ships are visible, adding depth and spatiality to the composition.
In the foreground, a fisherman stands at the water's edge, partly turned away from the viewer. This human presence enhances the narrative quality of the work and underscores the relationship between humans and the sea: observing, working, and dependent. Above the scene, a few seagulls circle, contributing to the recognizable coastal atmosphere and the sense of movement.
The color palette is predominantly muted, with greens, bluish grays, and earth tones that evoke the cool, damp atmosphere of a windy day at the sea. The light is diffuse and suggests a cloudy sky, without sharp contrasts, giving the overall scene a calm yet somewhat melancholic appearance.
The oval depiction within a rich, darkly ornamented frame enhances the intimate and classical character of the painting. Together, this results in a serene, realistic coastal scene where craftsmanship, appreciation of nature, and everyday labor are central.
