Otto Sverdrup was a crucial Norwegian polar explorer and the captain of the legendary ship Fram, famous for his participation in Fridtjof Nansen's first expedition to the North Pole (1893-1896), and subsequently led his own highly successful expedition to the Canadian Arctic (1898-1902) with the modernized Fram, mapping undiscovered areas and claiming the Sverdrup Islands. He is regarded as one of the great Norwegian polar heroes, alongside Nansen and Roald Amundsen.
