Description from the seller
Pau Lau (1936-2011). Oil on canvas, signed and dated in 1994. Dimensions: 65 x 82 cm.
The mature work of the painter Pau Lau, a German-born artist who developed most of his career in Spain, especially in the province of Alicante, where he was part of the pictorial vanguard since the sixties. His work evolved from an initial expressionist and abstract phase to establish itself in a figurative style with strong Fauvist roots, characterized by the exaltation of color and formal synthesis.
This canvas, dated 1994, features a female figure seated in a domestic setting, rendered with a vibrant and contrasting palette dominated by reds, blues, and greens, with warm notes that add emotional intensity to the scene. The brushwork, thick and decisive, enhances the expressive character of the piece, while the composition, built from juxtaposed chromatic planes, conveys dynamism and energy.
The work reflects the influence of Fauvism and European Expressionism, movements that shaped the artistic identity of Pau Lau, along with his particular assimilation of Mediterranean light. The artist, close to the colorist tradition of Gauguin and the French fauvistes, was able to reinterpret these influences in a contemporary key, contributing a unique language that became a mark of identity in his work from the seventies until his death in 2011.
In medium format (65 x 82 cm), this oil painting is a prominent example of Pau Lau's creative maturity, a testament to his commitment to painting as a vehicle of emotion, color, and vitality.
