Description from the seller
Author
Bruno Giunta (XX) was an Italian painter. An active artist in the Venetian context during the first half of the twentieth century, his artistic career is intertwined with the most prominent exhibition institutions of the lagoon city. Although details about his birth and education remain fragmentary, his presence is historically documented within the cultural fabric of the Triveneto during the difficult years of the Second World War.
The central moment of his notable activity dates back to the 1940s. In 1943, Giunta exhibited at the Fourth Interprovincial Triveneta Trade Union Exhibition, and in 1944 he participated in the Bevilacqua La Masa Exhibition in Venice. At that time, this institution represented the essential testing ground for young artists, often serving as a prelude to the Biennale and welcoming the most promising voices of Italian painting. He was a figurative artist deeply influenced by the experience of the Scuola di Burano.
Description
"Venezia, Scene of a Market", oil on panel, 35*40cm with frame, 17*22cm for the panel alone, signed lower left, datable to the 1940s.
The composition is dominated by the broad light areas of the market tents, which cut across the pictorial space and shelter barely sketched human figures, suggested through quick and synthetic touches of color. In the foreground, the field's pavement reflects the diffused light of the lagoon, while a typical cast iron fountain still marks the scene, establishing itself as a solid vanishing point. The background is defined by the chromatic masses of the buildings, where the intense red of the facades creates an enveloping warmth that contrasts with the slate grays and deep blues of the shadows, orchestrating a tonal play of great effectiveness.
From a technical perspective, the painting stands out for its energetic and substantial brushwork, which reveals Giunta's explicit proximity to the chromatic and material lessons of the Scuola di Burano. The impasto is dense and directional, giving the surface a tactile quality that transforms the urban view into a mosaic of light and painterly substance. It is a painting with a fresh composition and a pleasing aesthetic impact.
Condition Report
Excellent overall condition, the painting is intact in every part with vivid brushstrokes and colors, and well legible. The frame is to be understood as a gift.
Tracked and insured shipment with adequate packaging.
