In this edition a second part, dealing with perspective, is added. Thanks to the divulgative character, the reduced size and moderate price, the work found favour in a broader audience with regard to the 1711 folio edition and was reprinted several times. Divided in five parts, the first volume includes principles of practical geometry, the architectural orders according to Vitruvius, Serlio and Palladio, Galli’s own principles and the theory of architecture according to Vignola. The second volume, also divided in five parts, includes instructions for painters and achitects, for figurative painters, perspectve for theatre sets, the use of light and shadows and finally a chapter on mechanics, specifically about the transport of heavy objects from one place to another. Ferdinando Galli Bibiena was the most famous member of the Galli Bibiena family, which produced several renown architects and scenographers; he was first active in the service of the Duke of Parma, afterwards he entered the service of the Archduke Carl of Habsburg in Barcellona and followed him in Vienna when he was appointed Emperor of Austria.
