【Product details】

This mid-Showa period natsume tea caddy is finished in glossy black lacquer and decorated with a maki-e depiction of a traditional ox cart. The design is accented with areas of nashiji, adding a subtle, shimmering texture that enhances the quiet elegance of the composition. The ox cart is a classical motif associated with courtly life and refined aesthetics, often evoking a sense of calm, dignity, and cultural continuity.

Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique in which gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to create intricate designs. Nashiji uses fine gold flecks to produce a pear skin-like texture, providing depth and softness without overwhelming the surface.

The underside of the tea caddy bears the artist’s signature. It is accompanied by its original wooden storage box, which features a handwritten title, signature, and seal, confirming the work by Kōetsu.

There are age-related scuffs, small lacquer chips, minor dents, and areas of discolouration. The wooden box shows patina, minor cracks, and stains. Please refer to the photos for details.

Dimensions: approx. H 6.9 cm W 6.7 cm D 6.7 cm
