This Showa period jyoka pair is crafted in brass and presents stylised lotus blossoms and leaves rising from a central stem. Jyoka refers to purification lotus flowers used in Buddhist settings, offered before deities as a symbol of spiritual cleansing and reverence.
In Buddhist tradition, the lotus represents purity and spiritual awakening, as it emerges clean and untainted from muddy water. These pieces are intended to create a serene and dignified atmosphere when placed on a Buddhist altar or in a devotional space.
A maker’s mark is present on the underside of each piece.
There are signs of age and use with minor blemishes. Notably, there are visible remnants of adhesive with a bubbling texture at the base where the stems are joined.
