This elegant Showa period Japanese doll captures a refined moment from traditional dance, depicting a geisha holding a hand drum in a graceful, poised stance. The figure conveys the restrained movement and quiet dignity associated with classical Japanese performing arts.
The geisha is dressed in a richly layered kimono ensemble. The vivid red outer robe is decorated with fans and a variety of seasonal flowers including plum, camellia, iris, pine, chrysanthemum, peach, and peony. These motifs traditionally symbolise perseverance, renewal, longevity, prosperity, and refined beauty. The black obi features cherry blossom and peony designs woven with gold thread, representing fleeting beauty and wealth, adding depth and elegance to the overall composition. The drum is accented with gold decoration, harmonising with the richness of the attire.
Her traditional coiffure is elaborately styled and adorned with multiple hair ornaments, including decorative hairpins and cascading purple wisteria flowers, a motif associated with grace and longevity. The doll is presented on a black lacquer wooden base.
