Description from the seller
COTOLENDI, Charles (m. circa 1710)
Title: "Livre Sans Nom"
Divided into five dialogues.
At Hilaire Baritel in Lyon, 1695.
12°, a6, A-I12, T12, L-O12, Ff6, [xii], 1-345, [3] pp.,
French letter from the period, in leather, with dry-stitched decorative edges, fully gilded spine, with a shiny black label matching the period, red-sprayed edges, slightly worn corners, also described as below.
A story about the lived experience in society of the time, with anecdotes from French theater and the 'secret and gallant life' of Toulouse, Avignon, and Montpellier, also features illustrations with learned writing and tales from Italy and Spain as no less important. A journey described and accompanied by representative figures of the theater of the era, similar in some ways and in content to the epic adventures of the anthological works, the text recounts in the Fifth Dialogue the description of the descent into the 'underworld,' with the initial journey taking place through crossing the river that leads to Hades with the ferryman Charon.
The 'privilege' of this work states that it was granted to Michel Brunet (bookseller in Paris), who shared it with Hilaire Baritel of Lyon, and in turn with 'Sieur Plaignard, and to the said Sieur Baudet.' All editions of 1695 are Rare.
In this edition, the latest plates include a written description by the Publisher, an important note that recalls the history of the work and how it was delivered to the authorized prints for production in France.
This presentation highlights the valuable details, such as the woven and punched inlays on the plates, with decorative details on the back that include the frame for the black label, which is contemporary and contains the title of the text. It is a unique edition with a decorative engraving for the typographic mark, serving as an additional high-quality finish, inserted with information about the title, date, and edition. A rare and original work.
Excellent condition, with all the pages present, including the complete index of the Subjects of the Dialogues and Chapters. Decorative cards from the same period, as shown in the photo, are included to protect the white sheets. On the outside, signs of wear and rubbing are visible on the covers and spine; the interior shows scattered foxing and slight yellowing, widespread due to both preservation over time and the particular paper used at the time. No significant defects are found on the Plates that impair readability or the viewing of the characters, and there are no invasive marks that would detract from the integrity and aesthetic of the text as a whole.
The attached photographs are provided as a supplement to the presentation, for your review and kind attention.
