The Steyr-Mannlicher M1895 rifle is an early bolt-action rifle designed by Ferdinand Ritter von Mannlicher. It was used by the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I and after the war by both the Austrian and Hungarian armies.
The M1895 was originally equipped with an 8x50mmR cartridge. Between the world wars, both Austria and Hungary converted most of their rifles to the more powerful 8x56mmR cartridge and produced the M95/30 carbine.
Since 1930, Austria has converted most M95 rifles to the more powerful 8x56R M30 ammunition, using the same M30-en-bloc clips from Mannlicher. These rifles were designated as M95/30 and marked with the letter 'S' on the receiver ring. Hungary began converting their rifles to the same 8x56R ammunition in 1931, with the improved rifles marked with the letter 'H' on the receiver ring. Many of the M95 rifles were used during World War II by the Hungarian, Bulgarian, and Italian armies, as well as by some German police and military forces.
