Description from the seller
Droste XL Chocolate Tin – 1905 - In excellent condition – No reserve.
An exceptionally large and very rare Droste chocolate tin with hinged lid from around 1905.
The box carries the unmistakable visual language of early 20th-century brand craftsmanship, combining lithographed tinwork with an ornate Art Nouveau / Jugendstil-influenced cacao harvest motif, crowned by a warm, original brass interior lid plate. When displayed in a cabinet, on a console, or as part of a curated wall of historical advertising, it delivers undeniable presence and high-end quality.
Droste, founded in 1863 in Haarlem, grew into one of the Netherlands’ most influential and internationally recognised chocolate and cacao brands. By 1900, Droste was exporting across Europe, the Dutch East Indies, and the United States, supported by highly artistic and innovative advertising campaigns. Large-format tins like this one were produced in limited numbers for premium retail display, special product lines, or institutional use, making surviving examples extremely scarce.
The inner brass plate carries the original text 'Pastilles Droste' – a reference to one of the brand’s celebrated confectionery formats (compressed cocoa and mint pastilles), which were marketed as luxury throat sweets and cocoa tablets in this period. The embossed and decorated brass interior plate elevates this tin into the high-end segment of early advertising collectibles.
