Artist's Biography
Rafael Griera i Calderón (1934-2018) was a Catalan painter, draftsman, and illustrator born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and died in Olot, trained in the tradition of the School of Olot.
{}
Son of an Olotese manufacturer of religious imagery, he trained at the Escola de Belles Arts d’Olot and frequented the Càter d’Art circle, where he began his career with typical landscapes of Olot. His first exhibition took place in 1953, focusing on oil paintings, watercolors, and gouache.
{}
A contact in Mallorca in 1956 with painters like Anglada Camarasa led him to an informalism phase, after which he returned to figuration, breaking away from the luminous Olot tradition, drawing inspiration from Nordic and European schools such as Cézanne's or González Velázquez's. His later works depict realistic worlds with anonymous figures in interiors, landscapes, and cities, emphasizing individuality through plays of light and shadow.
{}
He created commercial illustrations and exhibited in books and catalogs such as 'Olot Art' (1979) or 'Rafael Griera' (1987), maintaining a personal approach against massification. His work remains active in the Catalan and Spanish art markets.
