Description from the seller

A small Parian bust of Southey by Goss.

A small bust of the poet Robert Southey (1774 – 1843) by Goss. Southey was one of the 'Lake Poets' who lived in the English Lake District. As well as being a poet, Southey wrote essays and biographies and was a keen historian. He was Poet Laureate from 1813 until his death.

The bust displays Southey’s elegant, noble profile and is clearly marked 'From the Drawing by Hancock (1796) Copyright as Act directs (W) H Goss Stoke on Trent March 30 1880'.

A refined late-19th-century Parian bust of renowned English poet Robert Southey (1774–1843), produced by W. H. Goss and dated March 30, 1880. Southey, one of the celebrated Lake Poets and Poet Laureate for three decades, is portrayed here with distinguished neoclassical elegance.

Beautifully modeled after the 1796 portrait drawing by Hancock, the bust displays crisp facial definition, graceful contours, and the characteristic soft sheen of Parian porcelain. The impressed inscription—“From the Drawing by Hancock (1796) Copyright as Act directs W. H. Goss Stoke on Trent March 30 1880”—is clearly visible, confirming authenticity and maker.

A highly decorative and collectible piece for lovers of literature, Parian ware, Victorian ceramics, and 19th-century portrait sculpture. Ideal for display in a study, library, or cabinet of curiosities.
