Description from the seller
Rare 18th-century work depicting Santa Barbara, probably painted by an artist from Podolia (Ukraine / Moldova), in oil on canvas, in good condition.
Podolia is a historical-geographical region located in the central-western and south-western parts of present-day Ukraine and northeastern Moldova. The name Podolia first appears in historical sources in the 14th century, when the Poles began to move into the region.
Ancient Ukrainian painting is a blend of old folk traditions, rich in magical symbols and connected to the land (such as the Pysanka), and the modernity of the Avant-gardes, which have managed to transform these elements into an art form recognized internationally, as evidenced by exhibitions dedicated to these themes.
Provenance: private collection, Milan, Italy
