Description from the seller
Antiphonary of Sens – Noted liturgical leaf, circa 1758.
Sunday between Circumcision and Epiphany – At Vespers
2 double-sided sheets from the original Grand Antiphonaire de Sens, printed in 1758 for the Metropolitan and Primatial Church of Sens, under the authority of Cardinal Paul d’Albert de Luynes, archbishop of Sens and primate of Gaul.
These sheets present the liturgical chants of Vespers for the period between the Circumcision and Epiphany, one of the most symbolic times in the Christmas cycle within the Catholic liturgy.
The Latin text is printed in carefully set characters, accompanied by square musical notation on a four-line staff, typical of the Gregorian tradition still in use in the 18th century.
One reads, in particular, the antiphon of the verses used in the Vespers service.
Antiphonary of Sens – 1758.
Coming from a very large antiphonary almost entirely destroyed.
Context and relevance of the document.
You are in the presence of pages from a very large liturgical antiphonary intended for use by the choir of the cathedral or a major institution of the Diocese of Sens.
Key features influencing the value 1758 (Ancien Régime, just before major liturgical reforms).
Exceptional format in 48cm × 32cm plan.
On vellum, heavy paper.
Gregorian chant content with square notation on a red staff.
Great readability, black and red ink, monumental choral usage.
Probable prestigious provenance of the archbishopric of Sens.
Very rare. The photos are an integral part of the description.
