Lode Sebregts (1906–2002), Belgian artist, signed on the front and verso, presents Vanitas stilleven - Memento Mori, a 1945 oil on board in expressionist style, 35 × 27 cm, original and in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Lode Sebregts is an Antwerp painter and poster designer who specializes in portraits, landscapes, and still lifes.
He makes his debut influenced by art deco and modernism but quickly evolves towards an impressionist/expressionist style. This is especially evident in the loose brushwork he employs in his landscapes. After World War II, he witnesses a new artistic liberation and increasingly experiments in his works.
Sebregts was a teacher at the SISA and at Studio Herman Teirlinck.
Works by him are among others housed in the KMSKA, the Museum Plantin Moretus, and the Letterenhuis.
This work reads as a modern expressionist version of the Vanitas still life, a depiction that reminds us of our mortality. Memento mori is the Latin phrase for it.
Artist: Lode Sebregts - signed front and back. With inventory number.
Oil paint on board
Dating: circa 1945
Dimensions: 37x25cm
State: excellent. Not framed.
