Bir Ounane 004 21º51.8568’N, 3º16.7766’W

Gao, Mali

Find: 2023

Classification: Ungrouped achondrite

History: Many samples weighing a total of 12.158 kg were found in Mali, 3.5 km northwest of the Bir Ounane site. Salek Mrabih and Sidi al Arbi hold the main masses.

Physical characteristics: The stone has a flattened irregular shape and lacks a fusion crust. The cut face is dark, orangish brown in color, and shows a poikilitic texture.

Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample shows a poikiloblastic texture composed of: 0.5 mm to 1 cm sized clinoenstatite, olivine, augite, twinned plagioclase, FeNi metal, and troilite. Olivine, augite, and plagioclase occur as interstitial phases and as chadacrysts. Olivine also occurs in lumps of equigranular grains interstitial to clinoenstatite oikocrysts. Additional minerals are: troilite, schreibersite, and daubréelite.

Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) Olivine (Fa1.0±0.1, Fe/Mn=4.1±0.8, n=12); low Ca-pyroxene (Fs1.3±0.1Wo0.9±0.4, Fe/Mn=2.7±0.8, n=12); high Ca-pyroxene (Fs0.8±0.3Wo40.3±1.0, Fe/Mn=2.3±0.8, n=8); plagioclase (An36.9±8.1Or0.2±0.1, n=6).

Classification: primitive achondrite (ungrouped). Based on petrographic characteristics, reduced mineral compositions, and find coordinates, this sample is possibly paired with the ungrouped achondrites Bir Ounane 001 and 003.

Specimens: Salek Mrabih (Dominion Meteors) holds the main masses. A polished thin section and an endcut weighing 21.4 g are on deposit at App.
