【Product details】

This is a Showa 50 (1975) samurai armour set consisting of a helmet, a menpo with neck guard, a pair of shoulder guards, and a cuirass with skirt panels. Although the size suggests it could be worn, it is recommended for display. The set is handmade and regarded as a non-professional reproduction armour, yet it is very solidly constructed and the overall workmanship is quite good.

The helmet is fitted with a large pair of kuwagata and a circular front ornament with a moon-like motif. The side flaps are decorated with a mitsudomoe crest. The mitsudomoe, with its three swirling shapes, traditionally represents cycles of life, movement, and protective power. The moon motif is often associated with calmness, clarity, and the changing nature of time.

Inside the cuirass, the back section is lined with a chrysanthemum-patterned green fabric. On the front interior, there is an inscription reading “Showa 50, Goro,” indicating the year and maker.

The shoulder guards and cuirass are made of iron with black lacquer, while the skirt panels and menpo are made of leather. The helmet is also mainly leather with some iron plates incorporated.

The armour shows age-related rubbing, signs of use, lacquer losses, and areas of discolouration. Please refer to the photos for details.
