About the Work
Palamas was one of Greece’s most accomplished literary translators, and Reiterated Music represents a defining example of his approach. The anthology includes translations of more than 80 French poems, with Sully Prudhomme most frequently represented, followed by Victor Hugo and others.
Palamas chose to translate primarily into unrhymed sonnets, employing demotic Greek and the traditional iambic fifteen-syllable verse.
This method allowed him not merely to mirror form, but to carry across tone, rhythm, and meaning—a translation strategy that gives the Greek text poetic autonomy without abandoning the essence of the originals.
The title Reiterated Music reflects Palamas’ belief that translation should clarify, re-sound, and reshape, rather than imitate word for word—an aesthetic echo that resonates through the volume.
About the Author / Translator
Kostis Palamas (1859–1943) is widely regarded as the national poet of Greece and a leading figure of the New Athenian School. He wrote the Olympic Hymn, influenced generations of writers, and helped shape Greece’s intellectual life for decades.
Palamas’ death in 1943 during the Axis occupation became a moment of symbolic resistance: his funeral drew thousands, and the recitation of Angelos Sikelianos’ poem transformed the ceremony into a public act of defiance, with crowds singing the national anthem and shouting “Long Live Freedom.”
French writer Romain Rolland praised him as “the greatest poet in Europe.”
