Description from the seller
Pair of carved wooden brush holders with Samurai depictions – Japan, early 20th century
This expressive pair of cylindrical wooden objects, most likely brush pots (Brush Pots / 笔筒), originates from Japan and dates to the early 20th century.
The two vessels are finely relief-carved all around and depict detailed representations of Japanese samurai in traditional armor, embedded in landscape scenes. The figures are sculpturally detailed, with clearly recognizable armor details, facial features, and movement elements. The imagery is complemented by geometric borders at the top and bottom edges, giving the objects a clear formal structure.
Such brush holders were traditionally used in the East Asian region as writing and scholar objects, serving to store calligraphy brushes on the desk. Besides their functional role, they always held a representational and symbolic significance. The execution as a pair is typical for high-quality writing utensils and emphasizes their decorative appeal.
The wood used displays a warm, dark brown patina that has developed through age and use, emphasizing the historical character of the pieces. The carving work is neatly executed and well preserved.
