Alphonso Antonio de Sarasa’s two-volume Latin spiritual and philosophical work Ars semper gaudendi, in one complete set, was printed in Cologne in 1676 by Ioannes Wilhelmi Friessem and is bound in full vellum with two functioning metal clasps and blue edges, totaling 1058 pages.

Ars semper gaudendi, demonstrata ex sola consideratione divinae providentiae : sive laetitiae perfectae artificium in conscientiae recta efformatione, inventum, et per conciones selectissimas expositum ac declaratum. 2 volumes in one complete – Alphonso Antonio de Sarasa (1618-1667)
Coloniae Agrippinae [Cologne]: Ioannis Wilhelmi Friessem, 1676. 2 volumes in one. Vol I: [37], 418, [22] pages; Vol II: [5], 640, [32] pages. 22.5cm x 16.5cm. Full vellum binding with 2 still functioning metal clasps and blue edges. Second edition of this spiritual and philosophical treatise designed as a guide to achieving uninterrupted inner peace and happiness. It is noteworthy for its unique synthesis of Jesuit spirituality, classical philosophy, and its long-lasting influence on both literature and famous thinkers. Comes with 2 engraved frontispieces and engraved initials and tailpieces throughout.
Rubbing, bumping, soiling, wear, and some damage to the boards and spine. The vellum spine is torn off at the top and partly at the bottom (see photos). Two stickers on the back board. Coloured pencil marking on the front pastedown endpaper. Pen inscription on the page facing the first title page. In Vol I. pages 121-128 bound in twice. Vol II has following issues: Pages 23/24 and 89/90 have a crease in the top outer corner. Page 341/342 has some creases in the lower outer corner. Page 371/372 has a small hole in the text part. Page 459 has some small soiling that obscures a small part of the text. Pages 465-472 are not in order, but the text is complete. Most of the index rerum has some bookworm holes in the lower inner corner. Heavy browning and spotting throughout. The text is clear, and the binding is solid. Overall, and considering its age, a copy in good- condition.
