Description from the seller

Hermès Silk Scarf Square 'The Italian Comedy'

Designer: Philippe Ledoux

The Italian Comedy, more commonly known in Italy as Commedia Dell’Arte, traces its roots to laughter festivals that form the basis of grand carnivals. This genre originated from the first troupe of masked comedy actors that appeared in 1528.

Commedia dell’arte is a genre of popular theater where masked actors improvise comedies characterized by naivety, cunning, and ingenuity. Performances took place on trestle tables. The humor was mainly physical (slapstick). Among the comedic characters, there are tricksters (Scapin), fools, schemers, cowards, or lovers (Pierrot), and female followers (Colombine), who is sometimes depicted as a young lady from a good family.

In this square, the decor is theatrical (curtain), and the actors are represented with their names.

Published in 1962, reprinted in 1993.

Quite rare and sought after by collectors.

Brocaded silk with mandoline patterns.

Was very good.
