A Yixing 'Rou Bian' (肉扁壶) teapot, marked 'Jingxi' (荊溪).
China, 1970s–1980s
A finely crafted Yixing zisha teapot of the Rou Bian (肉扁壶) form, characterized by its gently flattened body and balanced proportions. The purple zisha clay exhibits an attractive metallic sheen, adding depth and visual interest to the surface.
Both sides of the teapot are carved with poetic inscriptions, reflecting the literati tradition closely associated with Yixing wares. The poems may be translated as:
Scholars have loved tea since ancient times.
Since antiquity, scholars have delighted in the refined appreciation of tea.
Learning brings many talented individuals, and strict evaluation is as fluid as water.
Learning produces many scholars; their judgments are sharp as iron and clear as water.
The base is stamped with the mark 'Jingxi' (荊溪), a historic mark tracing back to the early Qing dynasty.
