Author/illustrator Hugo Franciscus van Heussen presents Oudheden en Gestichten van Kennemerland, first edition published by Christiaan Vermey in 1721, a two‑volume leather‑bound set in Dutch, 1067 pages, 20 x 13 cm, in fair condition.
Description from the seller
[Heussen, Hugo Franciscus] - Antiquities and Foundations of Kennemerland, Amstelland, North Holland, and West Friesland, comprising the antiquities, rise, and names of the cities Haarlem, Alkmaar, Amsterdam, Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Edam, Medemblik, etc., with the surrounding villages, their ecclesiastical and spiritual buildings, abbeys, monasteries, and chapels, church leaders, learned men, privileges, etc. Drawn from old manuscripts of churches and monasteries, and from many other memorials; most of which have never been published before. First part. Of the antiquities and foundations of Kennemerland: including the city of Haarlem, the famous Abbey of Egmont, and the surrounding villages. Translated from Latin and clarified with notes by H. v. R. - Leiden, Vermey, 1721 - first edition -(44) 560 (20); (2) 507 (23) pages - leather bindings.
Moderate/acceptable. Craquelé leather. Cracking on the leather, especially on the corners and edges, with exposed corners. Slight loss of leather at the head and tail of the spine. Faded title plates. Pencil scribble on the flyleaf. Interior pages discolored, browned, foxing, with a few spots. Hole in two pages. Tear, 0.5 to 1 cm, in the margin of three pages.
Part 1: front cover detached, left corner torn. Worm track at the bottom inner margin from the beginning to page 40, then the size of a pinhead until the end, moisture stain at the bottom extending into the text from page 295 to the end.
Part 2: folded open. Inner margin of page 1 glued against the verso of the title page.
The first part contains an engraving of the St. Bavo Church and its floor plan (a tear within the inner margin of 2cm into the image), 2 portraits (a tear within the inner margin into the image of about 3cm), and the monastery of Egmond.
Part 2: Old and new church in Amsterdam, St. Olofskapel? and engraving of a village (a total of 9 engravings) - all depicted.
