Description from the seller

The inscription on the painting reads: "D'APRES R.V. D. WEYDEN L.SUSTENDAL 1917."
D'APRES: This means "after" or "based on" in French, indicating that it is a copy.
R.V. D. WEYDEN: Refers to the famous fifteenth-century Flemish painter Rogier van der Weyden.
L.SUSTENDAL: This is probably the name of the artist who made the copy.
1917: This is the year the copy was painted. This painting is a version of "The Lamentation of Christ" (also known as Pietà) by Rogier van der Weyden and/or his studio. It depicts the dead body of Christ, supported by his loved ones immediately after being taken down from the cross.
The original work dates from around 1463-1464 and was partly carried out by assistants.
The performance focuses on the intense emotions of the figures.
Mary kneels in tears before her son, supported by John. There is some minor damage in the upper left corner of the image, see photo. The image is delivered unframed. The lot will be carefully packaged and shipped insured.
