AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Probably bought a Boa mask from DRC in Angola.

The Boa live between the Congo River and the right-bank Oubangui River. The population of this area is of Sudanese origin. Although the Boa tribe was influenced by the Mangbetu, the Boa works retain their originality. There is only limited information available about their use of masks. Apparently, they belonged to warrior associations or secret societies and were used in the context of war and hunting dances. It was believed that their power made men invincible and weakened the enemy. The masks also protected community members from the dangers of disease, hunting, evil spirits, and so on. Wooden rings instead of ears and red (or black) and white contrasts are very characteristic of the Boa masks.
With round perforated ears and a jagged mouth, this mask gave the wearer an impressive appearance.

Dimensions: 49 cm by 18 cm.
